In collaboration with the Department of Studio Art at the College of Charleston (CofC), the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to announce their annual juried student exhibition Young Contemporaries 2024, a celebration of talented student artists and their featured artwork, on display February 2-March 16.

Now in its 39th year, Young Contemporaries is an opportunity for CofC students and recent graduates to showcase their emerging talents and have their art displayed like that of professional artists. The exhibition features a wide range of media including paintings, sculpture, photography and prints, reflecting the strength and diversity of practice in the School of the Arts’ rigorous programs as well as the talents of the student body.

Following submissions, the work showcased each year is selected by a nationally prominent artist, critic or other arts professional. This year’s juror and awards judge is Professor of Studio Art, Painting Sarah Schuster of Oberlin College and Conservatory.

“We’re proud that Young Contemporaries is in its 39th year,” says the Halsey Institute Director and Chief Curator Katie Hirsch. “The Halsey Institute’s 40th anniversary is this year, so it’s amazing to think that this showcase of student work has been put on for almost as long as the Institute has existed.”

Concurrent with Young Contemporaries is Salon des Refusés, showing in the exhibition space of the Cato Center for the Arts and displaying student artwork carefully selected by Studio Art faculty. The origin of a Salon des Refusés dates to Paris in 1863, when artists who had been rejected from the official Salon caused such a protest that Emperor Napoleon III ordered another exhibition held for them.

Several awards will be presented to the accomplished student artists in both exhibitions at the Opening Reception and on the Institute’s Instagram.
