Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Blackbaud has been named a community health sponsor by the American Heart Association after the company made a donation to the nonprofit. Through its donation, Blackbaud will increase the accessibility of potentially lifesaving training through the installation of a CPR training kiosk at the Charleston International Airport. The kiosk will be installed by the American Heart Association in early 2020.

The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina was one of 60 organizations to receive grant funding through the Coastal Community Foundation’s Northern Lowcountry Regional Grants program. The $8,000 grant will support the association’s Own Your Life program, which provides personal independence and vocational rehabilitation training for blind and visually impaired adults in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Classes and opportunities provided through Own Your Life include assistive technology tutoring, braille, guide dog scholarships and mobility training, among others.

Individuals can access the Own Your Life program at the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired’s current office at 1 Carriage Lane, Building A in Charleston. The association is also opening a second permanent location at 9565 Highway 78, Building 800 in Ladson, which will open in Spring 2020.

Tradesman Brewing Co. and Charleston American Marketing Association are hosting “Get Down With Giving,” a panel of marketing experts, business owners and charity leaders who will share tips on how to incorporate charitable giving into marketing strategies and business plans. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Tradesman Brewing.

Attendees will learn how to give back on a small budget; create a partnership between organizations; increase brand awareness; select charities that are meaningful to employees and customers; and get media attention.

A ticket includes two tokens for beer, and with any additional beer purchase, Tradesman will donate $1 to the Charleston Basket Brigade, a nonprofit that feeds 3,500 Charleston area families in need for Thanksgiving.

Mount Pleasant Towne Centre has partnered with Lowcountry Food Bank and ABC News 4 to host Canstruction, a canned food drive that will showcase Philip Simmons High School students as they build a Lowcountry-themed structure with canned food. Canstruction will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Oaks, across from Barnes & Noble. The event is sponsored by S.C. Federal Credit Union, Costco and Geico Charleston.

The Canstruction team will be building a tall gate with two palm trees, inspired by professional gate blacksmith and school’s namesake Philip Simmons, who worked with iron to create iron gates across Charleston. An estimated 4,650 cans of food will be used in the Canstruction sculpture, all of which will be donated to Lowcountry Food Bank.

Event attendees are encouraged to bring additional canned goods for donation and will enjoy food and snacks, live entertainment by Chance and Circumstance, a jump castle, face painting, and arts and crafts activities.
