CHARLESTON, S.C. – A Lowcountry resident who distributes free school supplies to teachers in need has been honored by her employer as a 2023 Dominion Energy Volunteer of the Year.

Mary Ann Wright, a customer assistance supervisor for Dominion Energy in Charleston, has served on the Teachers’ Supply Closet board of directors since 2016. In April, she was recognized as a top company volunteer for her years of service to the North Charleston-based nonprofit. The organization will also receive a $5,000 donation from Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation.

Wright started her career in 1981 when she was hired by South Carolina Electric and Gas to work as a cashier. More than 40 years later, she remains committed to her community, working to connect struggling customers with a variety of available payment options and home energy assistance. Wright and her team attended more than 230 in-person community events in 2022, reaching more than 40,000 South Carolina households.

The child of a military family, she grew up in a home dedicated to helping others. Her mother worked as a family services volunteer on base. Her father served in the U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of chief master sergeant. She credits her parents’ legacy as the inspiration for her enduring passion to serve.

“I was raised to believe in rewarding people who actually do the work and walk the walk,” Wright said. “I understand the challenges our teachers face and the sacrifices they make for their students every day. I am honored to serve alongside my fellow volunteers at Teachers’ Supply Closet and provide these amazing teachers with the resources they need to help our students learn and grow.”

According to Lynette V. Duggins, executive director of Teachers’ Supply Closet, Wright has donated more than 1,000 hours to help the organization serve teachers in need.

“Mary Ann and Dominion Energy have always been great champions of our cause,” Duggins said. “Her partnership, support and many years of dedicated service to our board, demonstrates her extraordinary commitment to the teachers throughout Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties who work so hard for our children and our community.”

Dominion Energy employees across 16 states are eligible for the Benjamin J. Lambert III Volunteer of the Year award. Wright was one of six winners selected for their outstanding contributions to education, the environment and other critical needs in the communities where they work and live.
