Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Palmetto Goodwill has partnered with the American Red Cross to help those affected by flooding associated with Hurricane Florence. Goodwill issues referrals to people, who then claim a voucher for use at any of its thrift stores.

Palmetto Goodwill will also be raising money through its Round-Up program.


The Lowcountry Food Bank has hired Nicole Hinnant Locke as a nutrition education associate; Larry Mayo and Dan Higdon as route delivery drivers; Lyndon Merritt as a food resource associate; and Shannon Efantes as a finance associate.

The Charleston Parks Conservancy has received $25,000 in grant funds for the creation of a community garden at Corrine Jones Park in downtown Charleston.

Through a partnership with Keep Charleston Beautiful, the conservancy was awarded the grant as part of the 2018 Keep America Beautiful/Lowe’s Community Partners Grant Program.

The conservancy also received a $5,000 grant from Publix Supermarket Charities for the Community Garden Program and plans to raise an additional $50,000 in private funds to complete the Corrine Jones project.


The Mungo family, through the Michael J. Mungo Foundation, has contributed $100,000 to the Lowcountry Food Bank for its Hurricane Florence relief effort.


Camp Happy Days is scheduled to host the Heroes of Hope Gala from 7 to 11 p.m. Nov. 16 at Memminger Auditorium. The event will include live entertainment, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and a live and silent auction.

General admission tickets are $130 per person. The funds raised during the event allow Camp Happy Days to provide children with cancer with free year-round programs, special events and access to crisis resources.

Palmetto Blended is selling Carolina Strong t-shirts, and all the proceeds will be donated to hurricane relief efforts in the Carolinas through the United Way Hurricane Florence Recovery Fund.


Minor League baseball teams in South and North Carolina have launched a joint GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Hurricane Florence victims.

The funds will benefit the American Red Cross in the affected areas.
