src=Craft beer in South Carolina is having a moment. Maybe not as big as Vermont, which leads the country with 11.5 breweries per capita (defined as per 100,000 adults aged 21 and above), or North Carolina, which leads the Southeast with 3.4 breweries per capita, but the Palmetto State’s beer scene is growing fast. In 2011 and 2012, South Carolina had 16 craft breweries; in 2013 that number grew to 20 and in 2017, the state had 61 craft breweries.

“When we started the brewery in 2015, we were the ninth brewery in Charleston and the Charleston area, like Summerville and everywhere else,” said Jamie Martin, founder of Cooper River Brewing. “We didn’t anticipate there being … 30 breweries coming on the scene.”
