Virginia’s on King and Trident Technical College have established the Chef Shane Memorial Scholarship in memory of Shane Whiddon, formerly the executive chef at Virginia’s on King. Whiddon was shot and killed by a disgruntled former employee on Aug. 24.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student pursuing culinary studies at Trident. The scholarship recipient will receive up to $1,000 a semester for up to four semesters.

A portion of the restaurant’s sales from August will be donated to the Chef Shane Memorial Scholarship fund. Donations directly to the scholarship fund can be made online.

Charleston Beer Week is scheduled for Sept. 7-15. As a result of the growth in the craft beer industry throughout the area, event planners have added an extra day this year, resulting in a total of 64 events over the now nine-day period.

Many events will include specialty “one-off” beer releases, often brewed just for Charleston Beer Week; other events include food pairings, collaborative releases, tastings or style-specific offerings.

Events during the week will raise funds for local charities such as the Surfrider Foundation, Turtle Survival Alliance, Center for Women, Charleston Animal Society and H.F. Help No Kill Rescue.
