Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Parker’s Kitchen convenience and food service company is holding the grand opening for its new Moncks Corner location at 11 a.m. Thursday.

At the opening a $5,000 check will be presented to Berkeley County School District through Parker’s Fueling The Community program.

The company’s 61st store, at 1105 U.S. Highway 52 N., is the second location in Moncks Corner and the third Charleston-area location.


 src=5Church Charleston, in partnership with MUSC Children’s Hospital, is hosting its second annual Hospital and Hospitality Dinner from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 1.

Child patients will be hosting, cooking and serving alongside 5Church Executive Chef Adam Hodgson and the rest of the 5Church team, with all proceeds from dinner going to the children’s hospital. The children will also help auction off a gift available to those dining that evening.

Reservations are recommended.


 src=East Cooper Community Outreach is reflecting on Hurricane Hugo as the storm and the organization near their 30th anniversaries.

ECCO was formed as a relief response to the storm, which was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall on the S.C. coast in 1989. In the beginning, Christ Our King Catholic Church members donated food and clothing; it later expanded to other churches and an ongoing effort to address people’s needs.

The services offered by ECCO have also evolved over the years to include such programs as the monthly Fresh and Free farmer’s market and the Asset Development Program.

ECCO has been celebrating its 30th anniversary since May.


 src=Metanoia Community Development Corp. was awarded a 2019 Lighting the Way Award and $75,000 grant by the SunTrust Foundation in recognition of its contributions to the North Charleston and Chicora Cherokee area.

The SunTrust Foundation’s Lighting the Way Awards recognize nonprofit organizations that work to build self-sufficient families and more financially confident communities through financial education, financial counseling, career readiness, workforce development, and small business and entrepreneurship.

Metanoia is one of 36 nonprofits across the Southeast and Midwest and two in South Carolina given the $75,000 award this year. Soteria Community Development Corp. in Greenville was the other S.C. recipient.


 src=The 2019 Senior Resource Summit: What Seniors, Families & Caregivers Need to Know will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant’s Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Senior Center at 840 Von Kolnitz Road.

The event will include two panels to share information designed to educate and enable seniors and their family to better understand the scope of services provided by area agencies and organizations.

The first panel, at 10:45 a.m., will consist of expert panelists to answer questions related to aging in the Greater Charleston area. The second panel, at 12:45 p.m., will focus on ways Mount Pleasant assists the aging population. Each panel will be approximately one hour and will include a question and answer segment.

More than 40 service providers will be available throughout the day to provide information and educational exhibits on topics such as Medicare, affordable housing, retirement communities, nonmedical home care, home health, hospice, transportation, legal and financial services, senior employment, home repairs and transitions and VA resources.

East Cooper Medical Center will provide health screenings from 10 a.m. until noon and will offer CPR training from 12:30 to 2 p.m.


 src=Trident Literacy Association will hold a grand reopening of its newly remodeled learning facility in Goose Creek from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 25.

Volunteers with GoogleServe, a community service segment of Google Corp., worked on the renovation, including repainting the walls, installing new flooring, and donating smart boards, Chromebooks and other furniture.

The learning facility is located in Unit 116 at the back of the Creekside Square Shopping Center, at 205 N. Goose Creek Blvd.


Respite Care Charleston will host Sunset Sonata: Dancing through the Decades, on Oct. 3, a new date after the original event was postponed by Hurricane Dorian. The event is a “throwback prom” to benefit the nonprofit’s services for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The event will be held in the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and will include a silent auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar with a signature cocktail, and dance contests for songs from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased online. Dress is prom attire from any decade.
