The grant, totaling $100,000, is meant to bring fresh, local foods into schools and foster economic opportunity for farmers. It is the first Farm to School grant awarded to Charleston County.

The grant will help to give access to local foods in five eligible schools in the Charleston Neck area: Chicora Elementary, Mitchell Elementary, Sanders-Clyde Elementary, Meeting Street Elementary at Brentwood and Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. The program includes school gardens; farm field trips; a history, culture and farming field day; a harvest dinner; local food procurement; and agricultural education efforts.

Partners include The Green Heart Project, Fresh Future Farm and GrowFood Carolina.
