Porter-Gaud School will host a formal ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Lower School playground on Thursday, October 19 at 8 a.m. The Porter-Gaud Board of Trustees and the Advancement Office will participate in the ceremony along with faculty, staff, and students.

“We are thrilled to open our new playground, which will completely transform the way our youngest students experience recess and physical education on our campus,” says Head of School DuBose Egleston. “In addition to creating a fitness-rich space that encourages students to explore and discover the beautiful landscape that surrounds them, this new playground offers a wealth of opportunities for children to engage in interactive games and activities that will foster strong friendships and create memories that will last a lifetime. We are incredibly grateful to our donors for allowing us to create this wonderful space and for the legacy it will have for so many generations of Porter-Gaud students.”

The new playground includes a mega-tower play structure, swings, two four square courts, two tetherball courts, a basketball court with two adjustable goals, picnic tables with shade, and an artificial turf field with HydroChill sand. The multi-use soccer area will be utilized by students in all grades to strengthen their fitness and physical skills.

“For Lower School students, having time and space for unstructured play is essential for their physical, emotional, and social well-being,” says Michael Page, Co-Head of the Lower School. “Beyond offering opportunities for kids to collaborate with one another, solve problems, and express their creativity, recess and unstructured breaks have also been shown to help students focus on their lessons and enhance their performance in the classroom.”

Trident Construction was the general contractor for this project, and the equipment was provided by Churchich Recreation & Design. All materials used are resistant to tidal flooding and erosion.
