Porter-Gaud Celebrates National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week

Porter-Gaud School will celebrate National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week on Wednesday, September 13, from 8-9 a.m. with a breakfast program. The event is open to the Porter-Gaud community, as well as other schools in the area.

“We are committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive community at Porter-Gaud,” says Dr. Yerko Sepúlveda, Director of Community Engagement and Belonging. “Throughout different generations, many of our graduates have attended
HBCUs, and we celebrate with them and future generations.”

Wednesday’s program will highlight the role of HBCUs in our nation’s history and share their offerings as higher education institutions. Attendees will hear from current and former students who have attended HBCUs.

“As a college preparatory school, we join the celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and we recognize them as a source of accomplishment and excellence for the African-American community and the nation,” says Jennie
Harris, Director of College Counseling. “We are excited to host our 2nd Annual National HBCU Week breakfast to celebrate Black joy and excellence.”

HBCU Week started in the 1980s after President Jimmy Carter designated it as an official celebration. HBCUs have been educating black students since 1837. Today, there are more than 100 HBCUs across the country.
