As boat sales soar across the state, Berkeley County has launched plans for a $6.5 million “mega boat landing” project on Lake Moultrie, the county said in a news release.

The landing will be constructed at the former Atkins Boat Landing/Lions Beach site at the end of Broughton Road in Moncks Corner. It spans approximately 14 acres.

The project is funded by a 75% matching grant from the state, as well as state water recreation funds and Berkeley County Accommodations Tax, the count said.

In addition to a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office outpost dock for deputies to respond to lake emergencies, renovations and expansions of the property will include:

  • Six new boat launch ramps and a dock protected by a new breakwater
  • Event pavilion
  • Walking trail
  • Approximately 180 boat trailer parking spaces
  • Approximately 180 passenger vehicle spaces

Santee Cooper, which has partnered with Berkeley County on the project, has provided a long-term gratis lease to the county for the project. The utility provider will also design and permit the water elements, such as the docks and breakwater.

Berkeley County will permit the design plans in conjunction with the Town of Moncks Corner and S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. Berkeley County Roads and Bridges will be responsible for all work on the land and parking lot.
