United Airlines adds routes to Ohio and other Midwestern states

United Airlines is connecting Charleston to six Midwestern cities by adding 18 more weekly flights.

Starting May 27, the airline will begin nonstop service between Charleston International Airport and Pittsburgh; Indianapolis; Milwaukee; Cleveland; Cincinnati; and Columbus, Ohio.

The new destinations more than double United’s nonstop flights out of Charleston and create another route for those traveling to and from Ohio, one of the top states of origins for visitors to the Lowcountry, said Helen Hill, the CEO of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“We’re excited to welcome our inaugural nonstop service to Milwaukee as well as additional options for Indianapolis and Pittsburgh residents to conveniently enjoy our region’s unparalleled attributes,” Hill said. “Simultaneously, we realize these flights improve access for Charleston-area residents with family, friends, and business contacts in these markets.”

Executive Director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority Elliott Summey said Charleston is committed to expanding its services with existing carriers.

“We have been on a steady track to returning to pre-COVID passenger volume and today’s announcement by United will bring us a step closer,” he said.

As United Airlines rebuilds its schedules coming out of the pandemic, the airline has been strategic about what flights are added in, Ankit Gupta vice president of domestic network planning and scheduling at United Airlines said. Charleston is a favorite for travelers and the new service is an exciting opportunity.

“With many customers now beginning to plan summer vacations in places where they can enjoy time outside, we look forward to offering new service to key cities in the Midwest and East Coast,” she said.
