Traffic initiative adds 2 new participants

Two more Lowcountry employers have joined the Reboot the Commute initiative, a program launched by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance to reduce the region’s traffic congestion.

The addition of Geocent, a technology and engineering services company, and Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic brings the number of employers participating in Reboot the Commute to 20.

“When Reboot the Commute launched in April with 18 business and academic organizations pledging their commitment to reducing congestion, I hoped many other employers would follow their lead,” CRDA President and CEO David Ginn said in a news release. “I’m pleased Geocent and NIWC have answered that call. These 20 business and academic organizations are leading through action, and their collective impact will be significant for our region.”

Reboot the Commute includes an online guide that organizations can use to encourage alternative commuting strategies, such as telecommuting, staggered start times, ride-sharing, changing the timing or approach to in-person meetings, and connecting employees to local transit resources such as the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority and LowcountryGo.

Rick Gremillion, COO of Geocent, said the company has been making changes over the past several years to make employees’ work lives better, including alleviating stressful commutes.

“We recognize commute times are getting worse, resulting in less work-life balance for our employees, and we will do whatever we can to alleviate those challenges,” Gremillion said in the release. “We love what the Charleston community is doing in order to bring awareness to the need for flexibility in the workplace, and we are proud to be a part of this campaign.”
