S.C. Legal Services, a nonprofit providing free legal assistance to Palmetto State residents, has received a $155,940 grant from the Legal Services Corp. to help improve its use of technology to assist low-income individuals with civil legal needs.

The nonprofit will use the grant to expand the number of online classes it offers, including new courses on eviction, criminal records expungement, foreclosure, heirs’ property, education rights and debt collection. S.C. Legal Services is partnering with the S.C. Pro Bono Board on the project.

S.C. Legal Services has nine offices across the state, including one at 2803 Carner Ave. in North Charleston.

Legal Services Corp., established in 1974, is a nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grant funding to legal aid programs across the country. Its technology initiative grants program, established in 2000, is intended to help legal aid organizations develop and replicate technologies that improve efficiency and provide greater access to legal assistance.

Legal Services Corp. has provided $4 million in technology initiative grant funding to 30 recipients this year, including S.C. Legal Services.

“LSC’s Technology Initiative Grants increase access to justice for low-income people with critical civil legal needs,” said Legal Services President Jim Sandman in a news release. “These technology projects improve the delivery of legal services and information to the millions of Americans who would otherwise have to navigate the legal system alone.”
