More than a dozen outlet stores across South Carolina are being renamed.

Bealls Inc., which owns Burkes Outlet, announced in a news release that all Burkes Outlet stores in South Carolina and the rest of the country are being renamed bealls.

The company is retiring the Burkes name and dropping the word outlet at all 15 of its South Carolina stores to support its continued growth nationally, according to a Bealls Inc. news release. Seven of the South Carolina stores signs were changed in the past several weeks including stores in Surfside Beach, Taylors and Summerville.

Burkes Outlets first opened in South Carolina in 2000.

“We’re making this change so it's easier to find us everywhere and because some people think the word 'outlet' implies seconds or excess merchandise,” said bealls regional director Jerry Sweeney in the release. “Our stores are stocked with first quality brand name apparel, home and beauty products for the family.”

Bealls Inc. is a century old retailer that has grown from its Florida roots to more than 600 stores in 23 states operating as Beall Florida, bealls, Home Centric and Rugged Earth Outfitters.

Burkes Outlet gift cards, credit cards and rewards points will be honored at bealls locations, according to the release.
