Lowe’s Companies Inc., which operates eight home improvement stores in the Charleston area, is planning to lay off 80 people as the company transitions its cross-dock terminal to third-party operations.

Steve Salazar, manager of corporate communications for Lowe’s, said in an email that the company is not closing any stores or other facilities in Charleston. The transition, he said, is meant to make the company more efficient and improve service to customers. The changes will take place by mid-February.

Lowe's uses the cross-dock terminal to manage the logistics for appliance delivery in Charleston. Products are brought from a distribution center in Greensboro, N.C., to the Charleston cross-dock for bulk unloading of appliances to specific delivery trucks.

“We are working to transition impacted associates to roles at nearby Lowe’s stores and are coordinating with our third-party provider to offer impacted associates the chance to apply for jobs,” Salazar said.
