Three Kmart stores in South Carolina will close at the end of March.

The stores, located at 8571 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston, 3801-B Clemson Blvd. in Anderson and 254 S.C. Highway 72 Bypass in Greenwood, were selected for closure by Kmart’s parent company, Sears Holdings, according to a news release.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as Friday.

“The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the company’s operations and fund its transformation,” the news release said. “Many of these stores have struggled with their financial performance for years, and we have kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around.”

The company announced in late December that 30 Kmart stores and 16 Sears stores will close this year. On Wednesday, it added 78 more Kmart stores and 26 Sears stores to the closure list.

“Sears Holdings will continue to strategically and aggressively evaluate our store space and productivity, and accelerate the closing of some unprofitable stores as the company has previously announced,” the news release said.

Eligible employees at the closing stores will receive severance and the opportunity to apply for opens positions at other Kmart and Sears stores, the news release said.
