Sam’s Club is planning to build its second Lowcountry warehouse store at Nexton.

Nexton, a large, mixed-use project at the intersection of Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 17A in Summerville, is being developed by WestRock, formerly known as MeadWestvaco.

The Sam’s Club will be built along Sigma Drive near Nexton’s future Town Center, according to a spokeswoman for Nexton. Shoppers will have direct access to the store via the new Nexton Parkway interchange at exit 197, which is under construction and scheduled to open early next year, she said.

Sam’s Club currently operates a store at 4900 Centre Pointe Drive in North Charleston. The size of the new store and its opening date have not been determined, the spokeswoman said.

Last year, Nexton officials announced that Baker Motor Co. plans to build an automotive dealership and Harris Teeter will add a 76,000-square-foot store to the development. Opening dates for those businesses have not yet been announced.

Other warehouse clubs are also in the works in the Lowcountry.

In July, commercial development company GBT Realty Corp. announced it had acquired 10.5 acres for a BJ’s Wholesale Club. The 87,800-square-foot club, which will be the first BJ’s in the state, is expected to open in the spring. The store’s location — at the corner of Interstate 26 and North Main Street in Summerville — is less than a mile from Sigma Drive. North Main Street is another name for U.S. Highway 17A.

And in November, Costco Wholesale Corp. filed a memorandum of property purchase agreement to buy about 20 acres from Carolina Park Development LLC. The site is at the intersection of Faison Road and Park Avenue Blvd. in Mount Pleasant, according to the agreement filed with Charleston County (.pdf).

A site plan for the property shows a 154,000-square-foot Costco store and more than 700 parking spaces. Costco currently operates a warehouse store at 3050 Ashley Town Center Drive in West Ashley.
