The American Red Cross is calling on volunteers to provide help in sheltering efforts and health services. Licensed health professionals are needed, as well as student nurses and medical students.

Specific support needed includes clinical tasks, daily observation and health screening for COVID-19-like symptoms among shelter residents, providing health education, and helping replace medications or medical supplies.


Ingevity recently awarded $2,000 college scholarships to five high school seniors in North Charleston: Margaret Sears, a student at Lowcountry Leadership Charter School; and Jolie Crunelle, Tristan Jansen, Peyton Smith and Brady Zingerella, all from Wando High School.

Scholarships were awarded to students who demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to making a positive impact in their school and community.

Of the scholarships awarded, four were given to students entering four-year colleges or universities with a field of study in science, technology, engineering or math.


 src=The S.C. Association of Habitat for Humanity is holding Masking a Difference, a one-day collaboration to distribute 175,000 masks and 2,800 gallons of hand sanitizer among nonprofits and National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster partners at 17 Habitat locations.

After the event, the organization will have dispersed a total of 325,000 masks and 3,400 gallons of hand sanitizer to assist in South Carolina’s COVID-19 response.

Masking a Difference request forms for cloth face coverings and 50-gallon drums of hand sanitizer will remain open until noon Monday. Submissions from eligible organizations will be accepted in the order received. Locations of pickup and the official distribution date of supplies will be announced next week.


UnitedHealthcare is awarding nearly $1 million in Empowering Health grants to eight community-based organizations in South Carolina, including Charleston’s Fetter Health Care Network and Lowcountry Food Bank.

More than half of the grants will help organizations assist individuals and families experiencing challenges from social distancing, food insecurity, social isolation and behavioral health issues as a result of COVID-19.

Fetter Health Care Network was given $300,000 to expand the GroceryRx program, which provides patients with access to farmer’s market services, weekly nutrition classes and food vouchers.

Lowcountry Food Bank was given $95,000 to provide emergency food and food boxes for people experiencing food insecurity in response to COVID-19.

In total, UnitedHealthcare is donating $12.3 million through Empowering Health grants across 21 states.
