Clients of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina recently participated in a vision loss self-management seminar funded by a Community Engagement grant from Trident United Way.

The seminar was a six-week education and health awareness course that was structured to help blind and visually impaired adults develop self-efficacy, enhance their independence and learn to advocate for themselves to improve their overall health.

The Ark received a donation of $200,000 from the Dorchester County Legislative Delegation on Dec. 20. With these funds, The Ark is more than halfway toward its goal of raising $600,000 for ownership of The Ark House.

The Ark provides Alzheimer’s support services to families in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. Staff members offer respite care, support groups, resource referrals, caregiver workshops, memory screenings and training sessions for caregivers, law enforcement and EMS.

Molina Healthcare of South Carolina has partnered with Charleston Community Impact to launch the first Molina Closet in the state. It will provide resources such as personal hygiene items for men and women, and baby essentials such as diapers and wipes. The Molina Closet will also include a food pantry and educational literature on health care.

The Charleston Parks Conservancy is seeking new volunteers to garden in Charleston’s public parks. Volunteer tasks include planting flowers and shrubs, pruning, weeding, mulching and watering, depending on the season.

Volunteers can work as much or as little as their schedule allows. No gardening experience is needed; one of the conservancy’s professional horticulturists will be available to provide instruction.

Teams generally work on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. One group works at Colonial Lake, and another team travels to various other parks including Marion Square, Hampton Park and Tiedemann Park. A volunteer application form is available online.

The Employees Community Fund of Boeing has given a $4,900 grant to Charleston Area Senior Citizens’ Services Inc.

The funds will be used to provide hot, home-delivered meals to a waiting list of 100 to 150 seniors via Meals on Wheels of Charleston.

General admission ticket sales begin today for the seventh annual Wine Women & Shoes event, hosted by Florence Crittenton Programs of S.C. All proceeds will benefit the organization, which provides services to pregnant, parenting and at-risk young women and their children.

The event will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. March 12 at the Gaillard Center.

General admission tickets are $125, and VIP tickets are $175.

The event will include wines from wineries across the country, designer shopping and “Shoe Guys” serving trending seasonal items on silver platters. There will also be a fashion show and live and silent auctions.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has awarded an $8,000 grant to East Cooper Community Outreach. The funds will support East Cooper Community Outreach’s mission to provide safety net services to low-income residents in Mount Pleasant while empowering them to create a better future for themselves, their families and the community.

Lowcountry Land Trust’s third Flourish Conservation Summit will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel on the former Charleston Navy Base.

The event will explore the intersection of business and conservation and will include a focus on tourism, conservation and innovative business sustainability.

Tickets are $90 and can be purchased online.

Orvis board chairman Perk Perkins will be the keynote speaker, and panelists include leaders from the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the S.C. Aquarium and Volvo.

The event will continue with a cocktail reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at Storehouse 7.

Tickets are now on sale for Share Our Suzy Lowcountry’s 2020 Black & White Benefit.

Funds raised are used to provide assistance to breast cancer patients with everyday needs, such as wigs, prosthetics, child care and medication assistance.

The event will be from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Jan. 24 at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant. Tickets are $125 and can be purchased online.
