src=The Avian Conservation Center and several breweries are hosting Flighted, a beer festival benefit, on Sunday at the conservation center campus in Awendaw.

The festival will include beer tastings, birds of prey, food trucks and music. Funds will provide financial support for the center’s work in avian science, medicine and conservation.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $65 per person and $20 for designated drivers. Food will be available for purchase from local food trucks. All attendees must be 21 or older.

SeamonWhiteside has pledged $50,000 in design services to the Urban Farm at Enston Home, a project of The Green Heart Project, and is looking for in-kind and financial donations from the business community.

src=The farm, at the historic Enston Home property at 900 King St. in downtown Charleston, will serve as a venue for farm-to-school and outdoor education, youth development, healthy food access and community building.

SeamonWhiteside, a partner of The Green Heart Project since 2014, created the original design for the Urban Farm in collaboration with the community and other project stakeholders.

The firm and its staff have been involved in building previous school gardens, providing in-kind design services and have had members of their team sit on the nonprofit’s board.

Green Heart has raised more than half of its $2.1 million goal to fund the project for the next five years. Once finalized, it’s estimated the urban farm will yield approximately 3,000 pounds of produce for the community and school programs.

Long-term goals include an Upper Peninsula farmers market and events hosted at the on-site pavilion and farm stand.

The Coastal Cupboard is holding its semiannual Charity Knife Sharpening Event to benefit the Charleston Basket Brigade from Friday through Sunday.

Knives will be professionally sharpened for $1 per knife, with no limit on the number of knives per person. All proceeds go to Charleston Basket Brigade, a nonprofit that provides Thanksgiving meals to local families in need.

The event will also include interactive knife skills demonstrations, samples and cutlery specials. The shop, in Belle Hall Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday  and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Only straight-edge knives can be sharpened, not serrated knives.

The Charleston Basket Brigade provides a box filled with all the food items to cook a Thanksgiving meal: a 10- to 12-pound turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls and a pumpkin pie.

The Ark, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, is holding its second annual Ugly Sweater 5K Dash on Dec. 14 in downtown Summerville.

src=The race includes a 5K run and walk and the St. Nick’s 1-mile stroll, both beginning and ending at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at 206 Central Ave. The 5K begins at 8:45 a.m. and the 1-mile stroll kicks off at 9:45 a.m. Awards will be given out to the top three overall male and female runners.

Funds raised from this event help support The ARK’s work in five counties, including social respite programs, memory screenings, resource fairs, educational workshops and support groups.

Advance registration is $35 for the 5K, and $10 per person for the stroll or $30 for a family of four. Day-of registration is $40 for the 5K and $15 or $35 for a family of four for the stroll.
