Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek hosted the fourth annual Robert and Janice McNair Invitational last week, which raised a record $579,000 to fund scholarships for local students to attend Charleston Collegiate School and for the benefit and educational pursuits of Briar’s Creek employees.

Fifty-five benefactors participated at $5,000 each, additional tournament supporters contributed, and the McNair family matched every dollar raised. With the funds, 16 local students in grades four through 12 will receive scholarships to Charleston Collegiate.

The event has raised $1.88 million over the past four years, and 16 current students at Charleston Collegiate School have had their tuition funded by the tournament.

A portion of the total will also contribute to the Briar’s Creek Employee Educational Fund for the educational pursuits and retirement benefits of the employees at Briar’s Creek.

The Ponds Conservancy is hosting two events in the coming months:

At 2 p.m. Oct. 20, Larry James will present on recent archaeological finds from The Ponds at The Schulz-Lotz Farmhouse, 326 Hundred Oaks Parkway in Summerville.

At 2 p.m. Nov. 10, The Ponds Conservancy’s annual Rice Field Walk with historian Charlie Phillips takes place. This walk through the historic rice fields focuses on the history of the site when it was producing rice. It begins at The Schulz-Lotz Farmhouse.

Charleston resident Cokie Berenyi is holding a cocktail reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at The Harbour Club to kick off her campaign to raise $1 million for the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.

At the event, Berenyi will be sharing details about her upcoming Mount Everest climb in May 2020 and why she is dedicating it to Hollings Cancer Center.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served along with shopping pop-ups from Norton and Hodges and Snaffle Bit Bracelet Co., each of which will donate a portion of sales proceeds to the campaign.

Attendees can learn about becoming involved with Everyday Everest, which works to increase access to cancer treatment through outreach, education, and screenings.
