Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

The Junior League of Charleston is set to host a public leadership training from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Island Park Room at Laura Alberts Restaurant in Daniel Island. Presenter Lisa Beth Adams with Practical Dynamics will give a speech about how to speak well about one’s self. Attendees will receive a template to frame their personal brand during the interactive event.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.


Ingevity will sponsor 12 monthly Fresh for All events for the Lowcountry Food Bank. The company has committed $42,000 in financial support. In addition to the financial sponsorship, Ingevity employees will also commit to volunteer at the Fresh for All events.


The Lowcountry Food Bank is scheduled to host the 2019 Giving Tree Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Giving Tree recognizes the nonprofit’s most generous donors each year. Donors who contribute $5,000 or more during the previous year are recognized with a personalized apple.


 src=Patriots Point Foundation recently accepted two donations for $1,000 each; one from Hall Management Group and the other from an anonymous donor. These donations are being matched by the Patriots Point Foundation under their ongoing program for a total benefit of $4,000 to support the Flight Academy on the USS Yorktown. This will fund over two full classes of 30 students each.

Patriots Point Foundation will continue to match donations to support the Flight Academy, up to $5,000 individually and $25,000 total.

Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault recognizes the 18th annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the launch of its spring 2019 healthy relationships digital marketing campaign, Realationships 101. The campaign speaks to young people across the state to increase knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of a healthy relationship.


The Rotary Club of St. Andrews – Charleston is set to host the third annual Cornhole For a Cause from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 at Magnolia Park and Community Garden. The goal is to raise $10,000 to benefit three nonprofits: the Charleston Parks Conservancy, Lowcountry Orphan Relief and Pattison’s Academy.

Two-person teams can register for $50 per team. Team registration the day of the event is $75. There is no fee to attend and watch the tournament.


Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center is raising awareness in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month this April. The nonprofit will host the following events:

  • A city of Charleston press conference with Mayor John Tecklenburg is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Colonial Lake. The conference will address the pinwheel gardens, which will serve as a reminder of child abuse and how everyone can help prevent abuse from happening. Tecklenburg will declare the jurisdiction as a Pinwheel City.
  • A town of Mount Pleasant press conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Mount Pleasant Town Hall. Mayor Will Haynie will also declare the jurisdiction as a Pinwheel City.
  • Wear Blue Day is scheduled for Friday. Individuals and organizations across the nation will make a visible commitment to preventing child abuse by wearing blue.
  • Movie Night at Medical University of South Carolina Health Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday. This free event is family-friendly and includes games and activities, face painting, a balloon artist, food trucks, arts and crafts activities for children and information for parents. This year’s feature film is 101 Dalmatians. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
  • The nonprofit will also have free informational handouts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at the Charleston Farmers Market as well as from 3:30 to 7 p.m. April 23 at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market.
