Going Places, a nonprofit organization that provides children in low-income schools with new custom bikes, will provide 425 children from Sanders-Clyde Elementary School with bicycles at an event May 20.
Viking Mergers & Acquisitions Charleston, a business brokerage firm serving the Southeast, is sponsoring the event with several other businesses.
Going Places’ purpose is to allow kids to spend less time inside the home, which for many can be a high-stress environment.
Paws on The Patio, a happy hour event to benefit Charleston Animal Society, will take place on the second Thursday of March, April, May, September, October and November from 6-8 p.m. at Burtons Grill in Mount Pleasant.
Cost is $25 per person and includes two drink tickets and an appetizer buffet. Dogs will receive a party favor from Hairy Winston Pet Boutique. Charleston Animal Society will receive $10 from every ticket purchased.
Reservations are required and are limited to 30 people per event.
Big Brothers has been in the Lowcountry since 1973. In 1981, the Charleston Orphan House merged with Horizon House and Big Brothers to become the Carolina Youth Development Center.
In November, CYDC decided to support the creation of a new, independent Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
The launch of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry is scheduled for April. The program staff and the model will remain the same as when the program was under the CYDC.
Merridith Crowe will be the president and CEO of the new organization. She previously worked with Trident United Way for seven years after working with two Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations in Salt Lake City and Tallahassee, Fla. Program director Christina Hoffecker has been serving in the same role with CYDC for five years.
The new organization will work to support 1,000 mentoring relationships annually in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties by 2026.
The 16th annual Moms’ Run and Family Fun Day will be 7-11 a.m. May 11 at MUSC Health Stadium on Daniel Island.
The event is Postpartum Support Charleston’s largest fundraiser. All of the money raised goes to providing support and resources for mothers dealing with postpartum depression and anxiety.
The group offers free support through its Moving Into Motherhood online support community, in-person support groups, and support through Mom Mentors who are trained as peer supporters. Grants are made available for moms seeking financial assistance for specific programs.
Pre-race activities begin at 7:30 a.m. on race day. The run and walk begins at 8 a.m.
The Family Fun Day and awards ceremony will include music, food, and children’s activities including a jump castle, face painting, crafts and games.
Through April 25, registration is $30 per adult; $35 for strollers — 1 adult & 1 child; $5 each additional child in a stroller; $20 for children 10 and younger. Beginning April 26, prices go up.
LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air has chosen WEZL’s 2019 Concert for the Kids and Pattison’s Academy as the recipients of February’s Give Back Grant. LimRic’s Give Back Grant program makes a financial contribution to two nonprofit organizations each month.
WEZL’s 2019 Concert for the Kids is an annual benefit for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The event was held Feb. 12.
Pattison’s Academy is an education and rehabilitation academy providing comprehensive, year-round programs for children with disabilities and their families.
