Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Good Friends of the Lowcountry, a nonprofit that raises funds to provide one-time, limited monetary assistance to low-income families, is set to host its annual luncheon at 11 a.m. Nov. 29.

The event will include fellowship, stories from recipients and a silent auction. Last year’s event raised more than $100,000, which provided assistance for 118 women in need, including help with housing, medical expenses and utility bills.

Registration for the luncheon is covered by an annual membership fee of $65.

The USS Yorktown Foundation has created a $50,000 need-based education fund for junior ROTC and other student military organizations that will provide scholarships to the Flight Academy at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. This new program was funded by gifts from individual donors.

Patriots Point Foundation has also named Kenneth M. Pickens and Chaplain Maj. Gen. Charles C. Baldwin to its all-volunteer board. Pickens is a 1982 Citadel graduate. He is currently the executive vice president of South Atlantic Bank. Baldwin is a 1969 Air Force Academy graduate and pilot who served two combat tours in Vietnam.

The Lowcountry Food Bank has set a goal of raising $25,000 for #GivingTuesday next week. Donations can be made online to support the nonprofit’s efforts.

Registration is open for the 2019 Needtobreathe Classic, a celebrity golf tournament and musical event benefiting the nonprofit OneWorld Health. The event is set for March 25 at the Daniel Island Club.

Last year’s event raised more than $200,000 for OneWorld Health, a nonprofit that aims to empower communities around the world to achieve long-term improvements in health and quality of life.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is hosting guests of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston at its Five Star Day event on Monday. Hotel staff will provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, massages, facials, manicures, entertainment, recreation, housekeeping, laundry services and more.
