Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and Roper St. Francis Healthcare have partnered to present Pink Promenade, a sip and shop fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4.

Admission is $25 per person. All of the proceeds will benefit the Roper St. Francis Breast Cancer Program.


The American Lung Association in South Carolina is hosting Lip Sync for Lungs at 7 p.m. today at the Charleston Music Hall. The event includes five local celebrities who will perform live to raise funds for the nonprofit.

Performers will be:

Tickets are $45 at the door.


Save the Light is scheduled to host a barbecue fundraiser for the Morris Island Lighthouse from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at Gold Bug Island.

Tickets are $20 and include barbecue, wine and beer.


Atlas Technologies Inc. is the presenting sponsor of the 2018 March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction on Nov. 15 at Memminger Auditorium. The event highlights participating chefs.

Anthony DiBernardo of Swig & Swine is the lead chef, and George J.F. Bullwinkel III of Nexsen Pruet and Dr. Alison Dillon of Charleston Maternal Fetal Medicine are the event co-chairs. Atlas Technologies has been partnering with March of Dimes for more than 10 years.


The nonprofit Our Community Listens is hosting a free workshop called Communication Tips for Parents from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Church of the Holy Cross at 2520 Middle St. on Sullivan’s Island. Speakers Christine Donavan and Julie Chapman will be discussing the following:

  • How to give advice that your children will not reject.
  • How to talk so that your children will listen to you.
  • How to get your children to talk to you.
  • How to stop having to nag your children to get them to do what they are supposed to do.
  • How to stop yelling or being yelled at.
  • Bring peace to your home and your relationships.
  • How to act as unified parents when you are not unified.

Registration is required.


The Junior League of Charleston plans to help Operation Home build wheelchair ramps for families in need during the 2018-19 league year. Junior League members will volunteer service, and the organization gave Operation Home a $5,400 grant toward the wheelchair ramp program.
