Helping Out highlights some of the many charitable events and activities going on in the Charleston area. ATTENTION: Submissions should now be made using our online form.

Origin SC is holding a Back to School Bash from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Felix Pinckney Community Center. Participants will receive free school supplies as well as information about local businesses, organizations and resources. Free backpacks will be available for student attendees. There will also be free food and activities.


 src=Dragon Boat Charleston won a gold medal in the All Cancer Survivor Division at the recent International Club Crew Championships in Szeged, Hungary. The team, comprising 46 breast cancer survivors, competed in international races in Italy and Hungary in July.


The Charleston RiverDogs are dropping the RiverDogs name on Saturday in homage to a Lowcountry culinary tradition and ballpark icon Anthony Wright, aka Tony the Peanut Man, who died just after the 2016 season. The team will take the field as the Charleston Boiled Peanuts for the game against the Greenville Drive, with specialty jerseys and a rebranded logo.

There will be a pregame peanut festival on the concourse, and the first 1,000 fans at the gates will receive a peanut bucket. Boiled peanuts caps, jerseys and other merchandise are available on the RiverDogs’ online store and at the team store at Riley Park.

A portion of the night’s boiled peanut sale proceeds will go toward the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Peanut Man, Tony’s superhero alter ego, will also be on hand to help the Dogs celebrate.


 src=Lowcountry Heart Walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at Riverfront Park. Registration of teams and individuals is available online. The event is a fundraiser to support cardiovascular research and education. 


East Cooper Medical Center and the Thomasena Stokes-Marshall Senior Center Association are hosting the fourth annual Senior Resource Summit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at TSM Senior Center.

The event, which includes educational seminars and health screenings, is free and open to the public.


Crescent Homes’ Give philanthropy program raised $23,000 for local Charleston groups in the second quarter. The Give program donates $250 for every home sale to a local Charleston organization. The following Charleston-area nonprofits received donations:


Slow Food Charleston will be the beneficiary of Whole Foods Market Mount Pleasant’s 5% Day of Giving on Thursday.
