The Cane Bay Family YMCA now under construction is holding a fundraising campaign. Volunteers and staff have so far raised $1.75 million with the goal of having $5 million by the end of the year.
Money for the YMCA has come from individuals and businesses, including entrepreneur Carolyn Hunter, Cane Bay developer Ben Gramling of Gramling Brothers Real Estate & Development, Gulfstream Construction and the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Bill Hall, owner of the Hall Management Group, is chairing the fundraising effort.
The 54,000 square-foot facility is set to open in the late summer or early fall and will house a 25-meter swimming pool with zero entry, and a 5,000-square foot county library.
East Cooper Medical Center and Mount Pleasant Fire Department are set to host a free, educational event to help combat heat-related illnesses, specifically deaths related to leaving a child in a car, on May 26. Participants will learn more about the summer heat’s greenhouse effect on cars, what role air-conditioning plays and how to properly install their child’s car seat or booster with the help of certified technicians.
