An East Coast bagel shop is opening its first location outside its home base in the Charleston area.
Spread Bagelry, a Montreal-style, wood oven bagel establishment, will open its first location outside of Philadelphia in Mount Pleasant’s Oyster Park, with a grand opening set for early March 2023.
Founded in Philadelphia in 2010, Spread Bagelry has opened nine locations in the city of brotherly love, and one in New Jersey, according to a news release. Priding themselves on the notion that no two Spread Bagelries are alike just as no two bagels are alike, Spread is bringing their craft to the Lowcountry.
“We are thrilled to become a part of the Mount Pleasant neighborhood,” said Jamie Schrotberger, CEO of Spread Bagelry, in the release. “We have a unique opportunity to introduce a new kind of bagel to Charlestonians and we have been met with nothing but excitement and kindness.”
Spread Bagelry will be located at 1400 Shucker Circle in the Oyster Park shopping center in Mount Pleasant. Near The Works, Monkees, and Oyster Park Apartments.
By definition, a Montreal-style bagel is distinctly boiled in honey water and baked in a wood-fire oven, the release stated. In comparison to what we know as New York-style bagels, Montreal-style bagels have a golden brown crust and are sweeter and chewier.
Spread Bagelry is starting its expansion journey in Charleston. Having enjoyed popularity and a cult following in the greater Philadelphia area, COO Brooks Tanner and CEO Jamie Schrotberger decided to take the bagel down South, according to the release.
Spread Bagerly is open for breakfast and lunch, seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to midafternoon. Stores typically close around 3 p.m. when the supply of fresh bagels no longer meets the demand.
