The Charleston Board of Architectural Review unanimously approved an application for a new waterfront hotel in downtown Charleston on Wednesday night.

Lowe, the developer behind the planned 225-room hotel, acquired the 176 Concord St. property from the S.C. Ports Authority in January 2017 and is currently demolishing the former ports authority office building.

This was Lowe’s third application to the BAR.

“We are grateful to the city of Charleston and the Board of Architectural Review for their valuable input throughout the approvals process,” said Dan Battista, Lowe’s senior vice president of development in Charleston. “Lowe has been active in the Charleston community for over two decades, and we look forward to continuing our longstanding commitment to excellence with this world-class hotel project.”

In addition to retail on the ground floor, the hotel will include an outdoor waterfront cafe, a spa, a rooftop lounge and observation deck, meeting and event space, an upscale restaurant and an outdoor pool.

Lowe expects to break ground on the hotel later this year and open it in 2022. The company is partnering with national real estate investment and development firm Dart Interests on the project.

Lowe has also been working with Charleston to extend the Joe Riley Waterfront Park by 400 feet, starting at the park’s north entrance and ending at Cumberland Street. That project includes the expansion of dock access and the addition of a marina facility for public day dockage and the water taxi.
