South Carolina’s hotel occupancy fell 4.6% year over year in June, according to data from the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The state’s occupancy rate was 72.5% in June, 1 percentage point lower than the occupancy rate across the U.S. The country’s occupancy rate also fell last month by 1.3%, according to the S.C. data.

The drop is more than travel research firm STR Inc. predicted in last month’s state lodging report.

Average room rate across South Carolina also dropped year over year by about 1%, to $137.07, and revenue per available room, known as revpar, dropped by 5.4%, to $99.41.

Year to date, South Carolina is seeing a 63.3% occupancy rate, which is about the same as last year at this point, and a $117.34 average room rate, which is less than 1% higher. Revpar, which is $76.05 year to date, is also less than 1% greater than at this point compared with last year.

The three-month occupancy outlook for South Carolina from STR Inc. predicts a 74.2% occupancy rate in July, up less than 1% from last year, 69.3% occupancy in August and 60.4% occupancy in September.
