A new craft brewery plans to open in Charleston later this year, adding to the region’s explosive beer scene.

Victor Hoppenstein’s Brewlab, to be located at 2200 Heriot St., is projected to open in the fourth quarter. The company will be investing $1.1 million in building a new taproom at the site and the creation of 16 new jobs, according to a news release.

The brewery also will build a commercial kitchen on-site to offer food pairings with its beers.

“It is the goal of Victor Hoppenstein’s Brewlab to provide high-quality, unique beer and other food and drink options to customers who seek a relaxing and inviting environment,” said Joe Evans, partner at Victor Hoppenstein’s, in the release.

The Lowcountry currently has approximately 30 craft breweries, which is almost triple the amount that existed five years ago.

“Our community has a passion for homegrown products, and we are excited to see what the future has in store for our burgeoning craft brewing industry,” said Steve Dykes, executive director of Charleston County Economic Development, in the release.
