Two women were shot at Five Loaves Cafe in Summerville on Sunday afternoon when a gun inside a purse went off, said Summerville police.

An incident report said police responded to the North Cedar Street restaurant just before 3 p.m. and found Cynthia Smith, 57, of Goose Creek, laying on a bench after being shot in the buttocks.

Smith, a retired S.C. Probation and Parole officer, had a gun stored in her purse without a holster, and when she moved the purse, the gun went off, injuring herself and Jacqueline Duchene, 48, of Goose Creek. Duchene was shot in the leg.

Dorchester County Emergency Medical Services also responded to the incident and began treating Smith and Duchene at the restaurant before taking them to a nearby hospital.

Police took Smith’s gun, at her request, for safekeeping. The police report said since Smith was legally authorized to carry the gun and Duchene agreed it was an accident. No charges were filed.

Five Loaves declined to comment.
