Coast Brewing LLC, a family-owned craft brewery in the former Navy Base in North Charleston, is expanding with a $1.7 million investment.
The company will purchase its current location at 1250 N. Second St., which it has been leasing from the city, and expand on the surrounding property. The expansion will allow Coast to increase production from 4,000 barrels a year to more than 7,000 barrels, as well as add a taproom and a full kitchen.
“We are thrilled at the opportunity to purchase our property, expand production and add a long overdue taproom for public gathering,” Coast owners David Merritt and Jaime Tenny said in a statement. “We believe in grass-roots, sustainable growth, and as Coast turns 10 this year, it is finally time for the next step.”
Coast Brewing is expected to hire 29 new employees, including managerial, technical and taproom positions. Hiring is projected to begin in the second quarter of 2018.
Merritt and Tenny were key players in the efforts to change S.C. law to allow tastings, food sales and beer sales at breweries across the state.
“Coast Brewing Co. was the first Lowcountry brewery in the modern craft beer era, and they have led the way for countless other operations within our region,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey in a statement. “The industry’s local success can be attributed to Coast, and we are glad to see their expansion within the city of North Charleston.”
