Patriots Point Development Authority’s board of directors approved a nearly $13 million budget for the naval and maritime museum on Friday.

The budget for the 2018 fiscal year, which begins July 1, cuts $33,000 of operating expenses and anticipates an additional $350,000 in revenue.

Almost $1 million worth of capital projects are in the budget, including renovations to the USS Yorktown’s theater, replacement of the material on the aircraft carrier’s flight deck, restoration of several museum aircraft and improvements to security.

Mac Burdette, executive director of Patriots Point, said the budget gives the museum the resources to continue increasing the number of paid visitors to the attraction. He predicts Patriots Point will surpass 300,000 annual visitors in the 2018 fiscal year.

Several new exhibits are scheduled to open, the largest being the “USS Yorktown Engine Room Experience,” an interactive exhibit that gives visitors an understanding of what it was like working in the engine room of the aircraft carrier.

“We are very grateful to have a board that understands the importance of product development,” Burdette said. “Our staff works hard to improve our exhibits and overall visitor experience every day. That hard work is definitely paying off.”
