Spoleto Festival USA will not happen this year in Charleston because of the COVID-19 outbreak. It was scheduled for May 22 to June 7.

For 43 years, the 17-day festival has been held as a massive arts event with programs throughout the Lowcountry. This is the first cancellation.

“To continue plans in the face of COVID-19 would be irresponsible to our artists, audience members, volunteers, and staff, and to Charleston itself,” General Director Nigel Redden said in a news release. “We will be ready to celebrate the arts and Charleston again in 2021 when we all hope our world returns to normal.”

Next year’s festival is scheduled for May 28 to June 13 in Charleston. The world premiere of Omar, a commissioned opera by Rhiannon Giddens, will premiere during the 2021 season. As many artists as possible will be offered the opportunity to return next year, the news release said.
