Summerville Medical Center has begun a $24 million expansion of its emergency room, part of Trident Health’s $100 million investment in the facility.

The multiphase expansion began last month and is expected to be completed in August 2020.

The project will increase the emergency room capacity to 43 beds. It will also add 13,000 square feet of space, expand the existing lab and pharmacy, expand the existing cafeteria and dietary services, renovate outpatient registration and expand the emergency room entryway.

“Expanding our ER and pediatric ER will give us the opportunity to care for more patients, grow our pediatric ER program and increase the number of private rooms available,” said Dr. Preston Wendell, Trident Health emergency room medical director, in a news release. “We are dedicated to ensuring that our patients continue to receive the highest quality of care they need to recover and return to their daily life.”

The emergency room and dedicated pediatric emergency room, located at 295 Midland Parkway in Summerville, will be open throughout the project, though parking and traffic will be rerouted while construction is underway.

Patients and visitors must access the emergency room through a temporary entrance on the east side of the building parallel to Burton Avenue. Outpatient services, registration and financial services, and all visitors will enter through the main entrance.
