Gregory Habib, a two-year member of Goose Creek City Council, beat Mayor Michael Heitzler in the Goose Creek mayoral race Tuesday, ousting Heitzler from the office he’s held since 1978.

HabibThe Berkeley County Board of Voter Registration and Elections reported Habib received 1,612 votes, and Heitzler received 1,544. There were four ballots with write-in names as well.

Habib is the general manager of Charleston Steel and Metal, where he has worked since 2005. He has lived in Goose Creek since 1982.

“I am excited to get to work with City Council and our brilliant staff,” Habib said in a statement. “I believe in my plan for our city. It is not unchecked growth, but rather planned and deliberate development of our city.”

Habib also thanked Mayor Heitzler for his four decades of service to the city, and said that “Goose Creek is better for having had his leadership.”

Also elected on Tuesday were three new Goose Creek city councilmembers: Debra Green Fletcher, Corey McClary and Jerry Tekac.
