A new school that focuses on dyslexic learners is coming to North Charleston.
Gates School has purchased the former Strayer University property, a 14,000 square feet campus adjacent to Tanger Outlet, the school said in a news release.
The public charter school plans to open in August 2021 and serve 125 students in grades 1-5 in the Charleston area. As the school grows, it will add a grade each year through eighth grade.
The school is the first charter school of its kind in the Lowcountry, Gates School Board Chairwoman Stephanie Sams said.
“This is such an amazing day for families with struggling readers all over the Tri-county area… This has been a culmination of 2 1⁄2 years of research, planning and efforts of a great team of people committed to bringing this dream to fruition. We thank everyone who has been involved in this endeavor,” she said.
Gates is already full, but accepting students for a wait list. The school is also currently hiring teachers for the next academic year.
