Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative’s CEO plans to step down later this year after nearly five years leading the nonprofit.

ReadJohn Read, the organization’s first CEO, indicated when he was hired in 2014 that he was willing to stay in the position for three to five years; May will mark his fifth year with Cradle to Career.

“It has always been my view that a nonprofit CEO — especially one first to hold the position — should be careful not to overstay his welcome,” Read said in a statement. “TCCC has found its place in the community and is here to stay.”

Read informed the board of directors in June of his intention to step down this year, according to a news release.

“John is a fearless champion for improving educational outcomes and focusing attention on equity, and he will be missed,” said Anita Zucker, CEO of The InterTech Group and chair of the Cradle to Career board of directors. “We are incredibly grateful for his efforts and dedication, and we will continue this important work under new leadership.”

The board has formed a CEO search committee, chaired by Coastal Community Foundation CEO Darrin Goss, and a position announcement has been published on the Coastal Community Foundation’s website. In addition to a resume, applicants must submit a letter or case statement describing why they are the best person to lead Cradle to Career.

Cradle to Career spokeswoman Ashley Heffernan said that the organization hopes to have a new CEO in place by June but that Read has committed to staying in the position until his replacement is hired.

Read said in his statement that he intends to continue working to improve education attainment in the Lowcountry, “just from some other perch.”
