Grants fund Citadel research into STEM teacher development

Two collaborative research grants from the National Science Foundation will allow The Citadel to create and study professional development workshops in science, technology, engineering and math for teachers across North and South Carolina.

The $2.4 million project will be conducted by The Citadel’s STEM Center of Excellence, Zucker Family School of Education and School of Science and Mathematics, in partnership with North Carolina State University.

The Citadel's portion of the total, $1.54 million, is the largest grant that the military college has received to date.

“Our goal is to design, develop and investigate outcomes of professional development created to support teachers in integrating computing and STEM curricula used in middle and high school classrooms,” Jennifer Albert, director of the STEM Center of Excellence, said in a statement.

About 360 STEM teachers in North and South Carolina will be recruited to participate in summer professional development workshops, some team-based and others teacher-focused.

Researchers from The Citadel and N.C. State will investigate the effects of team-based professional development on the classroom and work to find ways to integrate computers and computational thinking in a variety of classrooms and contexts.

“We are very proud of this effort and the broad impact it will have on STEM education,” Connie Book, provost and dean at The Citadel, said in a statement.

The project is scheduled to begin next month and end in the fall of 2020.
