Philip Simmons Elementary School third-grade students took a field trip this week to see the H.L. Hunley submarine, which is undergoing restoration and study at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, part of the Clemson University Restoration Institute in North Charleston. More than 150 years ago, during the Civil War, the CSS Hunley sank in Charleston Harbor soon after it sunk the USS Housatonic, which marked a milestone in naval technology and warfare. Scientists have developed several techniques, technologies and procedures for the preservation of the Hunley since it was recovered from the harbor floor in 2000. The History Channel has more about the Hunley story.
