AHT Cooling Systems USA Inc. is expanding its Lowcountry operation to include assembly of commercial refrigeration and freezing equipment — making it the company’s first U.S. production site.
The company previously operated as a sales and distribution subsidiary of AHT GmBH, operating from within a 40,000-square-foot building at 3235 Industry Drive in North Charleston.
The Austrian company’s $5 million investment expanded its operations into a 150,000-square-foot facility at 7058 Weber Drive in Ladson. The new site includes an assembly line, audit room, office space and additional warehousing capacity, company president Devin Tombs said in an email.
The Ladson operation will now oversee North American operations, as well as handle assembly, distribution, repairs and product development, according to a news release.
The company expects to create more than 70 jobs. Hiring is underway.
AHT Group CEO Thomas Babacan said in the release that the company wants to capitalize on the ever-changing retail market in North America. He said the expansion “will further strengthen our brand and position as a leading refrigeration manufacturer.”
The company provides custom refrigerated and frozen merchandising products for the grocery and retail markets. AHT also has manufacturing sites in Austria, China and Brazil.
The state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits for the project; the amount was not disclosed.
