Ingredion Inc. plans to expand its Charleston County operations and double its exports out of the Port of Charleston, according to the S.C. Commerce Department.
The company turns grains, fruits, vegetables and plant materials into ingredients for products used by paper, pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries, to name a few, including sweeteners and starches.
After opening a North Charleston facility in 1988, Ingredion now plans to invest more than $10 million and create five new jobs at its site, located at 7680 Southrail Road.
“Reliable transportation is essential to our business,” said Jim Zallie, Ingredion’s executive vice president of global specialties and president of the America, in a news release. “We need a smooth-functioning system to deliver the raw materials used in our products, as well as to deliver finished product to our customers. The proximity to the Port of Charleston is a clear advantage.”
