Roper St. Francis Healthcare expects construction to begin in the next two months on a new Center of Excellence for Obstetrics at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley, the organization said in a news release.

The move will consolidate infant deliveries to St. Francis and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. This means Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital will no longer deliver babies starting in 2021, Roper said.

“Creating a Center of Excellence for Obstetrics at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital will dramatically enhance the depth and breadth of services available to women in the Lowcountry,” COO Anthony Jackson said in a statement. “We hope these improvements will enrich the hospital’s outstanding reputation and that it will help further differentiate this hospital in our market.”

The project will offer improved birthing suites, including larger and brighter rooms, the organization said. Design touches also are being added, including comforting paint tones, artwork and spalike bathrooms, the health care system said.

Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital has plans to grow surgical and oncology services, the health care system said, and the hospital will continue to offer other health care services for women.
