North Charleston City Council will consider the final reading tonight of an ordinance that would revitalize and amend plans for a senior independent and assisted living community along Dorchester Road.

A planned development of sorts was approved by the council in 2009 but was never implemented. Now, a new developer, Pearce Development, is hoping to bring the project to fruition with some amendments to the original guidelines.

According to the ordinance, the proposed changes include increasing the number of units to be built from 144 to 149, lowering the age restriction from 62 to 55 and adding a memory care unit. Other changes would involve increasing the number of parking spaces and the maximum height of the project from 41 feet to 50 feet.

The community would be located at 8601 Dorchester Road, between Wescott Boulevard and Ashley Phosphate Road, in front of the Whitehall neighborhood.

The proposal has been recommended for approval by the North Charleston planning commission and the public safety committee.
