The project will modernize and expand 16 rooms in the medical ICU and surgical ICU, along with three step-down beds, according to Tonya Lobbestael, a spokeswoman for the Charleston VA.

The expansion is expected to begin this summer and last about a year. Once that part of the project is finished, renovation of the existing ICU will begin, with a goal of all work being completed by the end of 2017, Lobbestael said.

Construction Services Group Inc., based in West Ashley, specializes in new commercial and industrial construction and renovations.

The Charleston VA broke ground in March 2015 on a new, $9.8 million parking garage that’s expected to provide almost 300 new parking spaces. Its completion is expected in the spring.
