JPMorgan Chase & Co. is opening new offices and hiring local bankers in Charleston to serve small and midsize businesses in the tri-county area.

Chase’s Charleston operation will consist of two teams: One led by Chase executive John Kopanski will serve businesses with over $20 million in annual revenues; the other will serve businesses with up to $20 million in annual revenues. An executive has not been hired for the latter team.

KopanskiThe executives will also lead Chase’s expansion into the Savannah market.

“Both cities have seen significant population and business growth over the last several years, and their seaports help fuel their states’ economies,” said Clarence Nunn, head of Chase’s Southeast middle-market banking business in a statement. “We have been serving businesses in the Carolinas and Georgia for nearly a decade and are excited to build out local teams in these important coastal cities.”

Chase spokesman Michael Fusco said once the leadership team is put together, they will decide the number of bankers Chase needs to hire in Charleston.

The company is leasing temporary space at 179 Meeting St. and is in the process of finding a permanent location.
