A Goose Creek tax preparer was sentenced to federal prison for preparing and filing over 1,300 false tax returns over the course of three years for his clients without their knowledge.
Stacy Middleton, 47, was sentenced to three years and five months behind bars and one year of supervised release after being convicted of two felony counts of willfully preparing and filing a false income tax return, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The fraudulent tax returns contained overstated, duplicated or fictitious deductions, as well as fraudulent expenses and fake copies of Form 1099. Middleton admitted that his scheme caused a tax loss of $3.5 million, the news release said.
Middleton owned and operated MBM Tax & Accounting Services LLC in Charleston. The Justice Department barred Middleton from preparing federal income tax returns for others in 2013.
