A Mercedes-Benz Vans supplier plans to open a manufacturing plant in Ladson and hire more than 130 people in the coming years, according to a news release.
Isringhausen GmbH will lease a facility in Charleston County to manufacture seats and seat assemblies for Mercedes-Benz Vans’ Sprinter model. The German automaker is undergoing a $500 million campus expansion in North Charleston, in part to produce its Sprinter vans from start to finish in the Lowcountry — replacing the current process of importing parts and reassembling vans at the plant.
German-based Isringhausen GmbH produces seats for trucks, vans, buses and off-road vehicles at 50 plants in 20 countries.
“We are very excited to expand our operations into the Charleston area,” said Tony Gentry, Isringhausen’s North American human resources director.
The manufacturer’s Charleston County facility will be in the Palmetto Commerce Park. Hiring will take place over the next several years, beginning in early 2018.
Will Helmly, chairman of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, said, “The CRDA team has been talking with Isringhausen GmbH for over two years about the competitive advantages the Charleston region offers. Our highly skilled workforce, business-friendly climate and globally connected infrastructure influenced the company’s decision to locate here to better serve its customer, Mercedes-Benz Vans.”
